How to choose the right trumpet mouthpiece?
Mouthpieces comes in various width, depth and shape of the cup, shape and size of the rim, size of the bore and the size and shape of the backbore. In other words, there are many trumpet mouthpieces widely sold and can be quite confusing to trumpeters especially to those who are new to the instrument.
Beginners can select a standard mouthpiece since they are inexpensive and easily available compared to other mouthpieces. Young players can begin using a small cup such as 10C and as they can grow and progress with their instrument, they can try to use 7C, 5C or even 3C. Those players with full-bodied embouchure, they can use a 1C or a broader cup size.
Where can I buy a mouthpiece?
Most shops that sell trumpets and pocket trumpets also sell trumpet mouthpieces. But you can also buy good quality mouthpieces in online markets like eBay and Amazon, just check though the seller’s credibility and the description of the product they are selling.
Can I test the shop’s mouthpiece before I buy it?
Musical and instrument shops usually let their clients test the pieces that they display upon the clients request. It is their responsibility to give the client the freedom to scrutinize a product; it is also a way for them to identify what are the pros and cons of the products that they are selling from the viewpoint of customers.
In addition to that, testing your mouthpiece can give you a great advantage since you can choose the correct mouthpiece for you thus the money you are about to spend will be worthwhile.
How should I test a mouthpiece?
If you are browsing in a shop, take your time in looking and inspecting each and every mouthpiece that is available. It would be a better idea to practice your usual piece and try the mouthpieces you are eyeing for it. Try all the tones and scales, gently ease into all registers, and test its flexibility. It would be good if you can bring along your teacher to tell you how you sound with that kind of mouthpiece. However if you cannot drag along your teacher and cannot trust another stranger’s comment, then try recording yourself while practicing the mouthpiece. Hearing it for yourself will make see how you really sound.
