What is a Boom Box?
A boom box is a gadget or device like a radio cassette however capable of producing louder or booming sounds than the cassette thus the name “boom” box. Its technical composition of two loud speakers and an amplifier makes it able to produce loud sounds that many street performers like break dancers, hip hop dancers and even rappers love this device.
Why is it called old school?
Although many boom boxes nowadays have been produced with the new millennium themes, still many are fascinated with the vintage look of boom boxes. Boom boxes were first invented during the late 1970s but gained much popularity during the 1980s when the art of break dancing and hip hop first emerged in the streets as a form of entertainment. In retrospect, such days were called old school whereas the 20th century arts were called new school.
Why was it used on the streets or carried on shoulders?
Many can observe that most boom boxes are carried on shoulders while it plays its music or used in the streets. Boom boxes can be powered through alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) which makes it convenient to carry on streets. In addition to that, during the 70s and 80s there were no formal stage where the people can perform and celebrate their art and only few disco clubs were built then. Thus they resorted to performing in the streets where it provided large area for them to dance in groups, show their skills in tumbling and break dancing.
Do Boom Boxes play other types of media files?
Vintage boom boxes have radio tuner where you can stream for broadcast music and cassette players where you can insert your cassettes and play your sound tracks. There are also vintage boom boxes that have compact disc players. However there are new school boom boxes that were built to adapt to new media files. They are now capable of playing different formats like mp3, WMA, CD-R and CD-RW. Some boom boxes have jocks in them where you can plug USB or flash drives and even iPods.
