In an orchestra, a harp is one of the more familiar instrument that can be found by people. The harp that is mostly used in an orchestra is the pedal harp and is often called as a concert harp, or concert grand harp, orchestral harp, double-action pedal harp, and or classical harp. The pedal harp usually uses maple wood as the material.
Pedal harps generate music the same way as other harps, through running your fingers through the string, but with an added mechanism. By using pedals, the pedal harp can change the string’s pitch. The pedals are connected to a cable inside the column of the instrument. When you press on the pedal, the column also moves which moves discs on top of the string which in turn shortens or lengthens the strings vibration. Both Diatonic and Synthetic scales can be produced by adjusting the pedals in a specific order and the pedals can be tied to a notch to set it into a position without holding your foot on the pedal for a very long time. It is a more easier method than those employed on piano’s wherein you have to step on the pedal and not let it go so that you can achieve the correct tone.
A pedal harp has many height variants and number of string variants but one thing is certain about the harp’s characteristics, it is one of the largest types of harp available. It can weigh up to 90 pounds and have more than 40 strings, plus the instrument’s length can reach up to 6 feet.
An easy way to acquire cheap pedal harps that are known to have excellent qualities is to scour for them on the internet from online shops who specialize on this harps and on used harps sites per se. Usually, a used harp sale comprises of second hand harps that have been refurbished or have been repaired back to their former glory. You might also find some harps that are still in mint condition on the net and they are a real bargain if you want to own one. Harps like these are usually waiting for the right owner so that they may play their elegant notes again into the world.
